Baking Memories

Now that I’ve started fresh with my blog I think it’s a good time to reintroduce myself and explain why I love to bake. Ever since I was a little kid I remember having family birthday parties where there was always enough food to feed an army and delicious and beautiful cakes, mainly made by one of my grandma’s. I grew up with two grandma’s that each had their own baking skills. My grandma from my dad’s side would make the best little pineapple pies and delicious Surinamese roti’s. And the grandma from my mom’s side of the family was really big on baking and made tons of beautiful decorated and just damn tasty cakes.

Sadly one of my grandma’s passed away last year, at the awesome age of 103 but the memories of her and her recipes will always live on in my memory. My other grandma is still going strong and cooking and baking cakes at 91 years old. Her baking has been the biggest influence in my passion for baking. Every year I got to choose which cake I wanted and she would bake it for me. You have to understand that growing up in the Netherlands in the 80s there were no decorated cakes to be found, or at least not the American type of decorated cakes. Nowadays everybody makes them but back than it was pretty unique. I grew up in the Netherlands but have Surinamese heritage and my mom grew up in Aruba, which is where my grandma first got to learn about decorating cakes. When my mom and her family moved to the Netherlands, my grandma continued with decorating cakes, making her fondant from scratch!

Recipes to Remember
Baking for me brings back a lot of memories. Because baking is usually done for special occasions, a birthday, a party, there’s always a reason to bake. One of the reasons I started blogging about baking is because I want to share my recipes so everyone can bake a little memory of their own. Whether I’m baking something I’ve been baking for years or coming up with a new recipe, I’m always baking memories. In fact, the first recipe I posted was called Memory Lane Lemon Meringue Pie

What are your memories?
I’m hoping that I won’t just be baking my own memories but also some of yours. A few years ago a friend of mine asked me to create a recipe specifically for her because one of her children has an allergy and she wanted to bake him something but didn’t know what. She told me what he can and cannot have and I set my brain to work and came up with a delicious little cupcake for her to make. I met up with her a little while back and she told me she still makes those cupcakes. Hearing that just makes me happy, it brings back memories for me and makes me happy that a new recipe has created new memories. Right now I’ve put myself on the challenge of starting up my blog again but once I get into the flow I don’t just want to bake my own recipes, I want to bake yours. What are your memories, or perhaps I can help you create new memories? I’m not just here to bake and tell you what I’m up to. I’m ready to be inspired and challenged by you. 😀
