Pastry Course Day 29: Painting with cocoa and visiting the Bakery Museum

On this day we went to the Bakery Museum “De oude bakkerij” (the old bakery). We got a tour of the museum and learned how to paint with cocoa.

The Bakery Museum is a relatively small building stuffed with all kinds of bakery items. In the museum you can see how the bakers worked in the old days. We got a really nice tour during which we were told all about the history of the bakers in the Netherlands. It was really fun and interesting to hear. During the tour we were also shown how easy it is to make Speculaas figurines. Speculaas is a type of cookie with different spices. It’s similar to a gingerbread cookie, but in my opinion better ;-). I’ve read that in the US they are also called Windmill Cookies.

I couldn’t stop looking during the tour. Everywhere I looked I saw something new.

After the tour we got a short demonstration on how to paint with cocoa on tragacanth. Next up, it was our turn. It turned out not be that difficult at all. It was really fun to do! I kept my drawing simple and in line with my last chocolate piece, a cupcake!
